Minoxidil is a medication used for the treatment of hair loss and high blood pressure. It was originally developed as a vasodilator (widening of blood vessels) and prescribed as an oral medication for the treatment of high blood pressure. Later, it was discovered that when applied topically to the scalp, it could promote hair growth in individuals with androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. Minoxidil works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, which can increase their size and prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle. It is available over-the-counter in topical solution or foam formulations at concentrations of 2% and 5%.
