2-bromo-2- nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol) is an antimicrobial agent commonly used as a preservative in many types of cosmetics, personal care products, and topical medications. It is used as an anti-infective, antimicrobial, fungicide, germicide, bactericide, slimicide, and wood preservative. Bronopol is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative (FRP), which is used in place of formaldehyde for people who are sensitive to it.
