Minoxidil, also known as loniten and minoxidilum, has a molecular formula and relative molecular weight of C9H15N5O = 209.25. It is a white or off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water or , slightly soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble, and soluble in glacial acetic acid. It can act directly on the blood vessel wall, dilate small arteries, reduce peripheral resistance, and lower blood pressure. It can also increase heart rate and cardiac output. However, its antihypertensive effect is more significant and lasting than that of hydralazine.
