Dl-lipoic acid is a unique anti-free radical substance and is often referred to as a broad antioxidant. It is a vitamin-like substance produced in the body. Unlike other antioxidants produced in the body that have specific effects, DL-lipoic acid is neither strictly fat-soluble nor water-soluble, making it useful for boosting the activity of other antioxidants in the body and a widely available substitute when antioxidants are scarce. For example, dl-lipoic acid can be a temporary supplement if the body's stores of vitamins C and E are low. Because DL-lipoic acid can cross the blood-brain barrier, it can help reverse the adverse effects of stroke.
Dl-lipoic acid also helps maintain normal blood sugar levels and prevent serious complications of diabetes. As we age, the body won't be able to make enough DL-lipoic acid to maintain good health.
